The API decision

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, 24 September 2008No Comment

Although we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of clients going straight to purchasing white-label formulations products, basically the switch for European generics companies from manufacturing to marketing, CEE markets still have low manufacturing costs generating a high potential for API trade.

Starting with the API and developing your own formulation means higher margins and more independence as some white-label contracts can be very restrictive and leave the marketer without room for future maneuver. Also the ability to have multiple supply options for your API rather than just one supply option for the formulation means more security should something go wrong.

So in making that crucial choice between going for a white-label formulation or going at it from scratch with the API, generics companies must consider :

- the time frame they have to launch

- their manufacturing possibilities (either in house or outsourced)

- the skillsets of their regulatory department

- the margin differences

- the availability of high quality API with proper documentation
